Applying for Financial Aid 2012-13: Prospective Students
- File the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The 2012-13 FAFSA will be available January 1st, 2012. Please note that you can (and should) initially file the FAFSA with estimated 2011 information, which you may correct at a later date.
- File the College Scholarship Service PROFILE. Please note that you can (and should) file the CSS PROFILE with estimated 2011 information, which you will update by submitting finalized information to Reed using the College Board's Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC).
- Freshman and transfers must submit the Noncustodial PROFILE, if applicable. If parents are divorced or separated, only the parent (and stepparent, if remmarried) that the student lived with the most in the past 12 months should complete the PROFILE. However, Reed expects both parents to assist in financing a student's education, therefore, the student's noncustodial parent must complete the Noncustodial PROFILE (NCP). The noncustodial parent must also submit copies of 2011 IRS income tax returns and W2s to the College Board IDOC service.
- Submit copies of your and your parents' (both custodial and noncustodial) 2011 IRS income tax returns, W-2s, 1099 statements, and the verification worksheet with the College Board IDOC service.
- Once your taxes are submitted to the IRS for 2011, you and your parents must use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update your 2012-13 FAFSA. Please note if your parents are married but filing separately, or recently separated/divorced, they may be unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and will need to submit an IRS transcript of their 2011 tax return, in addition to a copy of their 2011 tax return, to College Board IDOC service. If the IDOC packet has already been submitted, the IRS transcript may also be sent directly to the Reed College Financial Aid Office.
- International students must file the 2012-13 College Scholarship Service PROFILE and Noncustodial PROFILE (if applicable) and submit foreign tax documents to IDOC by the same deadlines as domestic students. Be sure to include Reed as a recipient (code 4654).
